Message from: annh@erols.com (Ann Avery Hunter Re: Another GOOCH Question Date: 97-05-08
The other children I have of John Chiles and Polly Tisdale are:
1. John T. Chiles, b. 26 Aug. 1795, m. Mary Lipscomb on 6 Jun. 1831
2. Fendol Chiles, b. 1797, m. Susanna Randolph
William Gooch was one of the executors of the will of my 3xgr. uncle Ralph Quarles.Ralph left most of his estate to the three sons of Lucy Langston, a former slave whom he had emancipated and lived with for about 25 years. After Ralph and Lucy died, the three boys went to Ohio, where the youngest was taken in by William Gooch who had moved there earlier. He lived with Gooch for about five years, treated as a son.
When the Gooches moved further west and were taking the boy with them, one of his brothers got a court injunction to keep him in Ohio.He saw Gooch once when he came back on business but after that never knew what happened to him.The boy was John Mercer Langston, the first Dean of Howard University Law School and the first black elected to Congress from VA.Last June a highway marker was dedicated to him on the Courthouse green, and his great-granddaughter came. Also there were his biographers, Bill and Aimee Lee Cheek.Quintus Massie and I were there as representatives of the Quarles family. It was a great day!I have wondered since reading JML's autobiography "From the Virginia Plantation to the National Capitol" what happened to the Gooches, and now I know.I wonder if their descendants are alive and know of the part their ancestor played in history?
