Descendants of John Dunn
My ancestors are as follows:
John Dunn
Martin Dunn
Thomas Rivers Dunn
Frank Lumpkin Dunn
There are some people that say John Dunn is the son of William (b. abt 1668) and Alice Gray Dunn, and that William is the son of Thomas Dunn (b. abt 1606), however I have no proof of that.
Descendants of John James Dunn

1. JOHN JAMES5 DUNN (WILLIAM4, THOMAS3, JOHN2, THOMAS1) was born 10 Oct 1719 in Northumberland Co., VA1, and died 1792 in Albemarle, VA1. He married ANNA MARION MARTIN Bef. 1756. She was born Abt. 1737, and died 1812 in Albemarle, VA.

3. Martin Dunn (d. 1842) m. 1793 Patsy Terry (d. 1857).
4. John Dunn m. Ann Martin.
John Dunn (1719-92) served as private in the Virginia militia. He was born in Northumberland
County; died in Albemarle County, VA
Also No. 144100.
From information provided by Martin Dunn in his Revolutionary War Pension Application, it states he was born in Orange Co. [around 1763], but moved to Albemarle when he was very young. From Orange Co. Deed Books, there are several entries for John Dunn. The first is DB 12, pg 441, dated 27 Apr 1758, where Edmund Taylor of Caroline Co. sold 160 acres to John Dunn [I believe it was on Blue Run]. Next, from DB 52, pg 191, John and Anne sold that same land to Alexander Marr on 24 Jul 1760. Finally, John and Nancy [not Anne] of ALBEMARLE Co. sold another 160 acre tract [Prites? Creek] to Robert Orsby of Orange [witnessed by William Dunn]. These deeds raise the question if this is the same John Dunn, and where / when he acquired the land. One possibility is the second 160 acre tract was acquired via a Land Grant.

Notes for MARTIN DUNN, SR.:
From "Revolutionary Pension Claims" by Fred Dorman: There are over two pages of information on Martin Dunn, of Louisa County, and his application for a pension. Most significant: born in 1763 near Barboursville, Orange Co., [next to Albemarle Co. line], brothers mentioned are James and William. There is a pension entry for James that states he was born in 1759 in Orange Co., and was granted a pension. "Martin, R3146, VA Line, sol m Molly Anderson Hughes & and the m. bond was signed by the sol[dier] & Wm. Hughes, sol appl 13 Oct 1845, Louisa Cty VA aged 82 in Mar 1845, sol srv part of the time as a sub for his bro William Dunn, sol was b in Albemarle Cty VA near the line with Orange Cty VA in 1763 & sol lived in Albemarle Cty VA during the Rev War, sol stated his bro James Dunn had family records & sol also stated his bro William was aged 6 or 7 yrs his senior."
From records contained in "Ancestral File 4.17", from the Family History Center, there is a Martin Dunn, born about 1762 in Orange Co. VA This lists he has two brothers -- James and Ruben, and he is the son of John Dunn and Anna Marion Martin. James was born in 1759 in Albemarle Co., and Ruben was born about 1764 in Orange Co. With the near match on both Martin and James' year, and place, of birth, I think there is a good possibility that the family information is correct.
Obituaries from the Richmond Enquirer: "Another Revolutionary Soldier Gone!" Mr. Martin Dunn, Sr. departed this life at his residence in Louisa County on 21 December in the 83rd year of his age. A more upright and honorable man never lived, and he died at peace with God and man. During the last 20 years of his life he was a [?] to the M. E. Church of which he was a member. "Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace." Ibid Dec. 29, 1846, Pg. 2, col 7.
Obituaries from the Richmond Whig states he "was in his 85th year".
From Louisa Co. Guardian Bonds 1767-1819, pg 411: Martin Dunn guardian to Nancy and Susan Dunn children of said Dunn; $1,000; Sec. Wm. D. Gooch and John Lipscomb, 14 Aug 1809."

From Marty Figg familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/f/i/g/Martha--E-Figg/index.html+martyfigg1%40att.net&hl=en
G.W.,age 23, and brother J.A, age 19, rode horses from Indiana to Delta, Iowa with money in saddlebags to buy land at Delta. This was about 1851. They bought land for $1.25 per acre. Iowa had just become a State in 1846. They returned to Indiana and moved to Delta. G.W.'s in-laws, Newkirks, also moved to Delta, and eventually some of their other Dunn's. In 1875, they began building a railroad in Delta. There was controversy about it, and G.W. gave $100 to have it built on a certain site. In 1870 census-Keokuk Co. Springfield Twn. --real estate value--$6,000 for G.W. Dunn. The younger brother J.A. that came with him, has an equally large engraved tombstone at Conner Cemetery. He was born in 1834 and died in 1895. Their father William never moved to Delta. William was born in Virginia, married Christine Tressler and then moved to Johnson County Indiana. William was my gggrandfather, my ggrandfather, John Henry (a brother to G.W. and J.A.)so they were Cora Dunn Fry's(my grandmother) uncles. The Dunn's were very prominate in Delta for years. G.W. and J.A. helped with the plans to build the Delta Christian Church in 1876--charter members and always very active in the church. Dunns owned hardware stores, harness shops, president of the bank, etc. The stone grocery store that still exists has the name Dunn engraved on the side of it. I am still searching where William's father, Reuben was buried. In 1838, William went to Virginia and brought his parents to Indiana. Reuben is in the 1840 Indiana census but no trace of him after that. His wife Nancy Lane Dunn was buried in Decatur Co, Indiana in 1853. She was living there with a granddaughter. Her stone was found in three pieces but no record of Reuben buried there or in Johnson County.

Subj: Re: DUNN FAMILY Date: 7/7/1999 12:53:34 AM From: wneuh@....net
Lori, While working with the Dunn family information you sent a while ago, I found an entry for Lewa Snow who married Polly Dunn, daughter of James and Sarah Harvey Dunn which is on WFT Vol. 2 # 4810. I think the name may be Lewis instead of Lewa and also think that Polly is the same person as Mary. In the Wood book on page 172, Lewis Snow and Mary Dunn are listed as the parents of Bertha "Rutha" M. Snow who married Hillary Wood Oct. 24, 1827 in Albemarle Co., VA. (They were the parents of Nancy, Frances Ann, Lewis Harrison, and William G. Wood. According to the Wood book Rutha and Hillary were divorced and Hillary married for a second time on June 12, 1856. Harrison and Mary Seamonds Wood were the parents of Hillary and my ancestor, Charles Ezekiel Wood.)
According to the information I have, Elizabeth "Betsy" Collins, wife of James Dunn (# 20 in your information), was the daughter of George and Nancy Eddins Collins, and the sister of Clarissa Collins who married Early Marshall (brother of Epaphroditus who married Nancy, sister of John Dunn). The Collins information comes from the Marshall history written by one of Epea's descendants. If you are interested I'll send what I have with the William M. Wood information.

Will of Thomas Marshall written March 13, 1849 and probated in Albemarle Co., VA on May 7, 1849:
Will mentions children: Wiley, Frances R. Mason, William, Early, Emily A. M. Harris, Epaphroditus.
All estate real and personal was to be sold and to be divided between all but Epaprhoditus who was left only one dollar.
. $500 was left to Epaphroditus children namely James T., Schuler, John, Daniel W., George, Patrick J., Susannah, Mary E., and Amanda.
The rest of the ready money and bonds were to be divided between all of the children except Epaphroditus.
Albemarle County Guardian Bonds, June 4, 1849
Children of Eppaphroditus: John W., Daniel W., George B., Henry P., Susan F., Mary E., Amanda M. were placed under the guardianship of James Marshall. Eppaphroditus was not deceased. Alexander Rives was security.

At one time he Epaphroditus owned 88 acres of land near Earlysville, VA. He later lived with his son James Thomas

From LorLin (forwarded from Glennis):
While I don't have specifics, I think I have a clue as to why Thomas Marshall left his son Epaphroditus one dollar. Thomas' will plus the Guardian Bond dated June 4, 1849 granting guardianship of Eppy's under age children to his son James, despite the fact that Eppy was alive at the time, indicates to me that there was a serious problem in the family. I believe the root of the problem was alcoholism and that Thomas didn't approve of his son's behavior.
My source is The Marshall Family History by Mrs. Anna Lee Johnson who was the great grandaughter of Eppy and Early Marshall. She states that both Eppy and Early were heavy drinkers (and that both were exceptionally tall). While she doesn't give specifics, she mentions that in his old age, Eppy lived with his oldest son, James Thomas, and that Frances in her old age, lived with her son John Wesley and his wife Angeline who was the daughter of Early Marshall. (Mrs. Johnson was a descendant of John Wesley and Angeline Marshall.)

Notes for DR. BENJAMIN FRANK DUNN: The 1850 Census lists Benjamin F. Dunn, age 29, physician, living with John and Mildred Dunn (parents). The 1860 Census lists Benjamin F. Dunn as the head of household, 40 years old, and a farmer / MD. His parents, John and Mildred are listed in this household. The 1870 Census for Orange County lists occupation as Physician, and there is Harriet F. (29) and Frank (1) living with him..
In the Gordonsville Cemetery (Maplewood) there is a fenced area with a gate marked "Wm. M. Dunn". Inside, there is a grave with a marker "To my husband, Dr. B. F. Dunn, Died Mar. 7, 1885, aged 64 years". Being 64 years old in 1865 would indicate he was born in 1820 or 1821 -- the same year as the Benjamin listed as living with John Dunn. When combined with the "Dr." title, I am inclined to believe this is the son of John Dunn of Louisa.
From Orange Co. Birth's 1866-1895, there is Frank W. Dunn, b. Oct 12, 1868, son of B.F. & Harriet Dunn. I believe this is the Lt. F. W. Dunn, killed in Cuba, that is also buried in Maplewood.
From information provided by Bill Dunn of California, the Wm. M. Dunn plot is for the brother of Benjamin F. Dunn. His marker indicates he was born June 28, 1823.
Also, the Marriage CD does not contain a marriage for this person, however, as the CD only covers up to 1850, it is possible he was married later.

This Marriage is documented on the Marriage CD, and is found in Orange Co. Marriage Bonds - Book 14, Page 104. It lists Benjamin Walker as the father of Mary.

Martin; dau. of Benjamin Walker; Orange Co.; Enquirer, June 3, 1842, p. 3, c. 6), and then in 1850 Martin Dunn writes a will mentioning his wife "Ann Maria", I must assume he was married twice. Antebellum Albemarle pa. 40
GREEN MOUNTAIN (Boonesville Road)
This tract was part of the 1,500 acres owned in different parts of the county by John Carr, who is believed to have built as his home the oldest wing of "The Riggory." This property on the North Side was intended as provision for three daughters, but two of them, upon marriage, left the county. The third, Eliza Carr, having married her cousin, Thomas Salmon, received 600 acres and his house, which her father built for her about 1802-1803. John Carr died in 1809. Upon the marriage of Jane Carr Salmon to the Reverend T. Rivers Dunn, "Green Mountain" descended to that line. It was the birthplace of Dr. Thomas Martin Dunn.

vi. MARTHA ANN E. DUNN, b. 09 May 1847, Albemarle Co., VA; d. Aft. 1880; m. (1) THOMAS WALKER THOMPSON, 16 Dec 1868, Albemarle Co., VA; b. Bef. 1848, VA; m. (2) THOMAS M. COSBY, Aft. 1872; b. Abt. 1842, VA; d. Aft. 1880.
I believe since "Pattie" is a nickname for Martha, that this is the "Pattie" Dunn that wrote several letters during the Civil War. Bob Woodward (San Diego 6/2006) is sending copies of pages from a bible that indicates Pattie was married to a Cosby. Here's what I believe:
1. Martha & Pattie are the same person.
2. Martha married Thomas Walker Thompson 16 Dec 1868 in Albemarle Co., VA. They had two children: Caroline Rivers (b. 1870) and Thomas Walker Thompson (b. 1872).
3. Martha remaried before 1880 because she can be found in the 1880 Albemarle Co., VA Census as follows:
Cosby, Thomas M. W M 38 (b. 1842)
Cosby, Martha W F 31 (b. 1849)
Thompson, Carrie R. W F 10 step-daughter (b. 1870)
Thompson, Thomas W. W M 8 step-son (b. 1872)
Other interesting, but possibly conflicting, information from the census records:
1870 Albemarle Co., VA, pg 330
Thompson, Thomas 26 M
Thompson, Martha 23 F
Thompson, Susie 1 F
The above possibly shows Martha/Pattie living with first husband, but don't know who Susie is -- possibly a child that died by 1880.
1900 Albemarle Co., VA pg 275
Cosby, Thomas M. W M 59 b. Apr 1844, m. 21 yrs
Cosby, Pattie A. W F 44 b. Mar 1855, m. 21 yrs Mother of 2 children.
Everything matches except her age.
1910 McLean Co., IL, Normal Twp., pg 52
Kepner, M. R. 69 widowed; Head; b. PA
Cosby, Pattie A. 60 widowed, b. Va.; patents also born in Va.; Boarder; mother of 2 children, but NONE living
Lewis, Carrie M. 20 single, b. Va.; patents also born in Va.; Boarder
Carrie would be the grandaughter of Pattie.

From the website for Dunn, NC (http://www.dunn-nc.org/history.htm): "The city of Dunn, known to its residents as an area of pride and progress, had humble yet memorable beginnings. A picture of Dunn and its birth is vividly painted by Dunn's own able biographer, Mr. Herman P. Green in the following excerpts ....... ...The name Dunn was in honor of Mr. Bennett R. Dunn, the civil engineer who laid out the roadbed and personally supervised the construction of the railroad between Wilson and Fayetteville ..... In 1885, a "short cut" railroad from Wilson to Fayetteville was begun and was completed on October 1, 1886. It was extended from Fayetteville to Rowland (43 miles) and was completed on March 28, 1892. Mr. Henry Pope deeded to the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad, Inc. a strip of land all the way across Harnett County 130 feet wide, 65 feet each side of the center of the track or roadbed. Since no limitations by metes and bounds were placed on the railroad by the deed, Mr. Pope, in effect told the railroad to select the right of way wherever they desired and after the rails were laid the metes and bounds would be already established.
From deposition of Thomas M. Dunn [brother], in a suit filed in 1889, states Bennett R. Dunn is living in Wilmington, NC.
From Albemarle Co., VA Will Book 30, page 303 for B. R. Dunn of Wilmington, NC. Mentions wife Mary J. Dunn, .... house and lot on the corner of 7th and Princess Street in Wilmington, 80 acres in Citrus Co. Florida, and my undivided interest in my grandmother Salmon's estate in Albemarle Co.; son B. R. Dunn, 5 shares of Atlantic and North Carolina RailRoad Company and my gold watch; son Wm. Adair Dunn, $75 to buy a gold watch; daughter Janie Bennett Dunn; desire my wife to sell the interest in my grandmothers estate to Thomas M. Dunn for the same price paid by him to the other heirs.... Appoint L. M. Dunn and Wm. Adair executors. Written 19 Jul 1893, recorded in Giles Co., VA on 22 Aug 1893, Albemarle on 6 May 1897.
From Cathy (KZPZ58A@......com) "My mother's cousin, Janice Dunn Dyess, published a little book on the Dunn family. This book speaks of Bennett R. Dunn. Janice does not show how we are related to Bennett Dunn, but she says that we are a distant cousin of his. I do not know how she knows this.
The book goes on to say that Bennet R. Dunn moved to North Carolina from Virginia. He was a civil engineer, for the Atlantic Coastline RR. Bennett was in charge of a spar line in 1887. The town grew and was named Dunn, NC. There is a picture of Bennet Dunn in the book. There is also a copy of a picture that appeared in a newspaper.. The caption reads "Special guests at Thursday's celebration were Mr. Elmer Dunn, great nephew of Dunn namesake Bennett Dunn and his wife of Richmond, VA. There is no date; so I do not know when this picture was taken.

From "The Central Virginian", Dec. 28, 1995, reprinted articles from fifty years ago -- November and December 1945. On page 6, " .... West Virginia Pulp & Paper Co. dealers were J. S. Purcell, Louisa; Cecil Elam and F. L. Dunn, Trevilians; ..."
I also have several articles from "The Central Virginian" that are too long to include here -- copies are in my "Dunn Scrapbook".
I have a theory about where Frank got his middle name of Lumpkin. Charles Hughson married a woman with the surname of Lumpkin (Louisa Co. Death records mention his two sister-in-laws - Lumpkin). Charles Hughson was the son of Samuel Hughson and Mary Trevilian, and he was the 1st cousin, once removed, of Frank Lumpkin Dunn, Sr.
