1 NOTE George R. Thompson grew up as a member of a farm family in Virginia. He was one of the first
2 CONC , if not the first, of his family line to leave Virginia and set off on his own. At age 18 ye

2 CONT Richard W. Thompson's sister Mary Elizabeth Thompson married James Thompson McGehee on Novemb
2 CONC er 19, 1799. And James T. McGehee's sister was Mary McGehee who married Richard Wyatt Thompso

2 CONC hee sister and brother.

2 CONT When Mathew and Sarah were married and moved to Louisa County, as early as 1775 when he is sh
2 CONC own on the Trinity Parish Tithables list, he is found in various records and land dealings. I
2 CONC n some records he is called "Mathew of Caroline County".

2 CONT The last property Mathew purchased in Louisa County showed a "family graveyard" on the deed o
2 CONC f land. Perhaps when Mathew died in 1785 he was buried in that family graveyard.

2 CONT We did find a couple who moved, we believe. from Goochland to Caroline County. We also believ
2 CONC e, due to naming patterns in the Thompson family, that Mathew's father would likely have bee
2 CONC n named John Thompson, as Mathew had a brother John. The couple we found who seemed likely a
2 CONC s the parents of Mathew were John Thompson who married Ann Peatross. Mathew himself is likel
2 CONC y named after Ann's father, Mathew Peatross. We believe that Mathew's brother John would be n
2 CONC amed after the father of our Mathew, that is, John, such that both brothers, Mathew and Joh
2 CONC n would have been named after their grandfathers.

2 CONT For several early generations of Thompsons in the Colonies, the first born son would be name
2 CONC d either for the dad's father or the mom's father. The second son would be named after the fa
2 CONC ther who had not been so honored. The girl's born would be named after the grandmothers, an
2 CONC d the mother also. Then aunts or other favorite family, or friends would be named, or sometim
2 CONC es Biblical persons or historical persons names would be used.

2 CONT John Thompson's wife Ann Peatross, had parents Mathew Peatross and Amy Catlett. Mathew Peatro
2 CONC ss' Will of April 1766 shows that Ann had died young, but that the elder Mr. Peatross had lef

2 CONT Also, we find that a John Thompson acted as Executor for the estate of Mrs. Mary Chiles, moth
2 CONC er of Amy Chiles Wyatt, who was the mother of Sarah Wyatt, the wife of Mathew Thompson. Thi
2 CONC s estate work took place about 1770 or 1771 in Orange County, a place near-by Caroline County
2 CONC , Virginia.

2 CONT So, we know that this John Thompson and wife Ann had a son named Mathew and had moved into Ca
2 CONC roline County, Virginia, where Mathew Thompson's wife Sarah Wyatt was born and lived.  And th
2 CONC at he lived there in the right time period. Additionally, there were no other John Thompson
2 CONC s in the area or who had a son named Mathew.

2 CONT Sarah's husband Mathew died fairly young, in 1785 there in Louisa County, Virginia. Withi
2 CONC n a few years a guardian was appointed to assist with the children to ensure their education
2 CONC , etc. The guardian was a widower, Augustine McGehee, with a child of his own. Five years aft
2 CONC er the death of Mathew, Sarah and Augustine were married and shortly after moved to Washingto
2 CONC n County, Virginia. Sarah died 01-26-1830 in Washington County, Virgina and Augustine died ne
2 CONC arly a year later on 12-20-1830. The couple had moved to Washington County after Sarah's so
2 CONC n John had married and moved there.

2 CONT Sarah was born in Caroline County, Virginia in an area called "Plain Dealing" which is consid
2 CONC ered the "ancestral seat" of this line of Wyatts. "Plain Dealing", the Wyatt homestead was o
2 CONC n the North Anna River, about 6 miles for where the South Anna crosses the North Anna.
